5 Ways Parents can Support Executive Functioning skills at home

Executive functioning is the umbrella term used to describe the set of skills we need in order to
  • Control our impulses
  • Solve problems
  • Make and adjust plans
  • Recognize and fix mistakes
  • Set, implement, and achieve goals
  • Control our emotions

There are a variety of ways parents can support their children in the development of these skills.  Here are a few quick and easy ways

  1. Play card and board games that require your child to:
    1. remember - classic memory games
    2. match number or suit- Uno
    3. respond quickly- slap jack, 5 second rule
    4. use some strategy- Sequence Jr., Battleship, Guess Who
  2. Physical games that require attention and focus such as Simon says, red-light green-light, and follow the leader
  3. Play guessing games like “I Spy”,  “20 Questions”, or Headbanz
  4. Take turns telling stories or make it a game in which someone says one sentence to start a story and each person continues the story by adding their own sentence.
  5. Model and talk about good self-care strategies and routines

If you feel like your child needs more support with developing the skills mentioned above please reach out.  We provide 1:1 as well as group EF coaching services!
